Pearly shells collection
In honour of my Aunty Paula and the song ‘pearly shells’ I have created a collection that celebrates her beauty, joy, love and tenacity.
Aunty Paula was born at Yarrabah and while nana and pop also lived in the community, Aunty Paula had to live in the dormitories during the week, going home on the weekends and holidays.
Aunty Paula nearly died as a young child in the dormitories, left to die by white people who deemed nana and pop incapable of caring for her.
I admired Aunty Paula so much. She was a fighter. She had bad arthritis and never complained. She made the best mulberry tart and my holidays were spent at her place with trips down the creek.
Aunty Paula gave me the greatest gift, op shopping. Aunty Paula was the best op shopper in town and taught me everything there is to know about second hand shopping. Aunty Paula passed away not long after her 90th birthday. I miss her dearly.
Every piece I make brings me a smile and reminds me of her.
